Systems Biology

::

Systems Biology is a new approach to biological research which considers the whole biological system as a whole. In systems biology the interactions between molecules is as important as the molecules themselves.

Systems Biology inlcudes three complementary perspectives:

  • Comprehensive measurements: the new techniques of microarrays, proteomics, and metabolomics, and other high-throughput technologies
  • Theoretical biology: providing a basis for understanding phenomena
  • Computational biology: because a systems approach requires computation (ie the mathematical formulations require computer support)
